Terragen is a program which makes you create your own imaginary landscapes. It's easy to use, but has lots of options so you can make lots of changes to your designs. Here's an example of what the program can do.

Getting Started:
  • Load Terragen.
  • Here's what each of the main buttons do:
  • First, you need to generate the landscape. Click on the Landscape button, then choose 'Generate Terrain'. Explore the different options and choose 'Generate Terrain'.
  • Click on the 'Landscape - View and Sculpt'. You can now change where the camera is, and where it is pointing to. Drag the green circle to move the camera, and drag the red circle to move the target.
  • Click on the 'Paint the Landscape' button. You can now paint your landscape. Clicking on an area makes it higher... CTRL-clicking on an area makes it lower.
  • Explore the other options to make changes to your landscape.
  • To see what the finished landscape might look like, click on 'Render Preview'.
  • To make your final landscape, click on 'Rendering Control'. Change the detail to a high level, change the width to 400 and the height to 300. Render the Final Image to a File, give it a name (your name(s)) and save it in the ICT CLUB folder on the desktop.
  • Now, wait for the landscape to render... it might take a few minutes, so be patient!

Remember to add your information to the Register when you have finished!

Ideas and Challenges to Try:
  • Can you create landscape with lots of mountains?
  • Find a landscape photo using YotoPhoto. Can you try to recreate that landscape using Terragen?
  • Make a set of photos which show the same landscape. Then, use iMovie to make a video for a travel agent which advertises that place. You could also add your own Garageband compositions as background music and include a voiceover telling people what the place is like.
  • Make some Terragen photos to use a backgrounds in a comic strip (using Comic Life).
